Back in the day, I used to know my music. Maybe it had something to do with the drummer I was dating at the time – who knows? But now, I find myself forever seeking good music and not knowing where to look.
Yes, iTunes has tons of songs, but to me, they are like a big box store for music. I just can’t see the leaves through all those trees of new releases. Yet I happened across this song, Sabali, by Amadou & Mariam and it re-kindled my love of this Africa-based duo.
Have you heard it yet? It’s from the CD Welcome to Mali. I first heard Amadou and Mariam ages ago when they released Dimanche a Bamako in 2004. I heard on NPR that Manu Chao (I’m a huge fan of his!) produced that record (do they still call them records?) so I gave it a listen. Anyway, I fell in love with this husband and wife team but, as will happen, I over-listened to their songs and then stopped playing them.
Blah, blah blah…enough about me. The music speaks for itself. I just love their unique mix of sweet melodies and funky rhythms, not to mention the couple’s haunting voices.
Give it a listen and tell me what you think! Or, better yet, let me know what’s on your iPod.
You can buy Amadou & Mariam’s Welcome to Mali on iTunes, or if you prefer the plastic you can get it on Amazon:
