Chalkboard Wall Decals by WallCandy Arts

The first words out of my 2 year old’s mouth when she saw her new chalkboard were, “Wow! That’s cute, Mommy!” To her, cute covers all things that she likes A LOT. Then, she proceeded to scribble with abandon all over the wall.
She did, to her credit, look out of the corner of her eye at me to see if she was doing something wrong since she knows she isn’t supposed to color on the walls. But, when I smiled and nodded and even picked up some chalk and colored with her, her little brain must have lit up like a firecracker for all the furious drawing she did.
I admit, it might be a tad confusing for her to be allowed to color on the wall when it has a chalkboard sticker on it and not when it is just plain old paint…but luckily the chalkboard stickers look like, well, a chalkboard, so it is easy to tell the difference.
I’ve written about these things before. WallCandy Arts was gracious enough to send me their large stickers so I thought I’d write again because they are THAT much fun for my daughter. And, as a choosy mom – I try to keep too many electronic toys and other things that “do” things away from my daughter since I like to help foster her imagination rather than supply her with entertainment – I love the idea that Sophie can express herself and her creativity with these impromptu chalkboards.
Each sticker (there are 4 in a pack) measure 19″ x 24 1/2″ but, if you check out their website you’ll find that they actually have a number of different sizes and shapes including an apple, a bus and even a sticker in the shape of a Rococo mirror. I love these large rectangle ones because it gives your budding artist a large “canvas” to work on. And believe me, Sophie channels her inner Jackson Pollack, with her large sweeping arcs of color accented by oodles of dots and dashes. She’s even figuring out how to draw a real circle, which as i understand it, is quite advanced (but of course I’d say that of my kid!)
You can configure these stickers in a line, space them out if you have multiple kids that need their own space, or arrange them together to make one large chalkboard. And, the best thing is, if you change your mind, just unstick them and stick ‘em back…they can be moved around without tearing and do, actually, re-adhere. I know because I’m indecisive myself and had to try out a few iterations before settling on what works best for us – 2 in a line near her table and 2 in her bedroom. In fact, I was a bit haphazard with my arrangement as I wanted to test out just how well they re-stick. You know how some manufactures make claims that just aren’t true (no, for real?) Take it from me – the sticky stays stickyand it doesn’t peel the paint off your walls.
WallCandy Arts sends chalk with the stickers, but I’ve found that sidewalk chalk is also fun to experiment with, if you have that already on hand.
If you get these, do be prepared for lots of requests. My daughter, who loves all things baby and kitty cat, has been asking for me to draw kitty cats and babies ALL the time ALL over the chalkboard. She’ll point to a corner and say, “right here, Mommy, kitty cat.” I’ve got precious little drawing ability so this exercise helps her with her imagination, too, as she has to discern a kitty cat from my scribblings. Luckily our nanny is way better at this!
Oh, and her friends love it too…maybe a little too much. It causes some territorial disputes unfortunately. But, at age two, what doesn’t?
I kid you not, if I could move all of our furniture to the middle of the room and paper the walls with these things, I would. They are that good.
