Chocomize: Custom Chocolate Bar Made Just For You

by Kate on June 28, 2010

Mmmm. Chocolate. I do love my chocolate. I’m what you would call a chocoholic. When I heard about a chocolate bar that you can “customize,” I thought “nice, but not for me.”

Typically the chocolate is ho-hum and the treats you can “add” to your bar are either too sweet or are boring (yes, yes, peanut butter cups are delicious, but they ALREADY have chocolate so why would you put them in a chocolate bar?) Actually, now that I think about it, I’m a chocolate snob. My usual take is this: with such great chocolate bar options out there, why would I want a personalized chocolate bar?

Well smack my ass – Chocomize is why! When those lovely folks offered to send me my very own bar I had second thoughts, but only for an instant. After all, I DO love my chocolate. I said sure, send me something yummy.

Boy did they.

Just to back up, let me tell you a little about Chocomize first. Chocomize sells custom chocolate bars. First, you choose the chocolate (dark, milk or white) and then you add toppings…like nuts or fruit or candy. It looks like you can add as many toppings as you’d like. The topping selection is way more inclusive than your ordinary topping bar. Some of the toppings like poppy seeds, raisins, organic cashews and roasted pistachios are what you’d expect.

However, Chocomize has a long list of creative additions like roasted sunflower seeds, mangoes, and gummy bears. What makes them even more fantastic is the not-so-expected toppings (think herbs and spices) like sea salt, cardamom, crystallized rose petals and all sorts of fun treats. You can even add birthday or anniversary wishes on the chocolate bar.

In all, Chocomize offers 106 different ingredients. If you think about it and do the math, that equals 36,843,895,308 different possible combinations. If they were feeling extra generous, Chocomize, according to their own blog, “could give a different chocolate bar to every single person in the world for almost a whole week”. Their words, not mine. Just think of it!

Now, back to MY chocolate bar…I got my very own “Kate’s Chocolate Bar” – one with cherries and almonds, the other with crystallized violet petals and peanuts (and a Happy Birthday plaque). Both came on a dark chocolate bar.

Talk about delicious, the dark chocolate is so good – sweet but not too sweet. And the toppings are big and plentiful. The cherries were full and plump (as plump as dried cherries can be) and the peanuts were the size of actual peanuts. Imagine that.

The violet petals were an intriguing touch – a little strange, a little interesting. I can’t say I tasted violet (what, by the way, is a violet flower supposed to taste like?), but they crunched in an unexpected, puffed rice sort of way. A little crunch with some give. Very tasty.

You can order your chocolate bar solo for about $5.00 – not much more than you’d pay in a grocery store for something way less inventive. Or, if you’d like, you can order in bulk. Great idea for weddings or corporate events…

Plus, I’ve got to hand it to Chocomize for giving a portion of their proceeds away to charity. You can see the charities they support on their website and can even add some money to your order and have it go directly to the organization of your choice. And Chocomize tells you how much they’ve raised so far for each organization. Nice touch.
