I normally delete e-mails about nutrition as I feel like anything I want to know I’m not going to learn from spam. However, this one caught my eye. It’s called the 7 pillars of nutrition and here’s a quick re-cap and the 4 that I find to be the most important and the easiest to forget…you can read the full article from the Jewish Community Center.
1. Eat a rainbow. Easier said than done as there aren’t too many purple or blue fruits and veggies that catch my eye in the winter, but eggplant and blueberries are indeed delicious any time.
2. Regulate blood sugar. Don’t let yourself starve or get too too full. Eat complex carbs, like whole grains instead of all those yummy white foods that are really no good for you. Of course, be careful about products advertising “whole grains.” On the side of my Tostitos there is an ad saying that they use whole gains in those corn chips…not exactly healthy eating. Oh, and eat good fats instead of bad fats, but this I assume you already know.
3. Get your fats straight. Again with the fats – know what is bad fat and what is good. That one is pretty easy – if it’s saturated, then it’s no good. Think fries, donuts, butter. Do eat good fats like nuts, olive oil, omega 3s.
4. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink water. More than you think you need. 8 glasses a day.
Sounds simple, right? Not so when you’re balancing 2 kids, work and a household. But, still, it’s good to try. Especially at this time of year when New Year’s resolutions may be fading fast. If you can get yourself in to the right habits, then eating well and exercising will come naturally…that’s what I’ve heard anyway.
Here’s to another year and another try for me.
