Holiday Card Photos: Pay A Professional

Full disclosure: I have two hats to wear while I write this post: mom and photographer. Today was the day we decided to take our holiday card photo. When did holiday cards become a thing, I don’t know, but they definitely are a thing.

Maybe it has something to do with families being spread out across the nation and world, with little face time and only pictures to relay how the kids are growing. I kind of like the tradition, though, of sending pictures AND holiday wishes at the same time. Two birds, one stone.

As a photographer, I thought, no biggie – I can take our holiday photos. I’ve got equipment. I can do this. Well, photographing someone else’s family is TOTALLY different from photographing your OWN family, believe you me.

My child doesn’t have to “perform” for me – she sees me all the time with a camera, what’s so special about holiday photos? Any my husband, let’s just say that when he’s in a mood to cooperate it goes swimmingly, when he isn’t, it doesn’t. And if anyone can push a husband’s buttons, it’s his wife, right? Finally, how do I get in the shot, looking natural and relaxed and ready to be photographed? Doesn’t happen.

So, for this year, I’ve decided (after a wasted, stressful morning) – it’s either a solo image of our daughter taken when she is in a good mood and not suspecting a photo has to be taken or we’re hiring a professional. Though, to be honest, I think I’ve missed the boat on hiring someone as time is running out and everyone seems to be very, very busy. Lesson learned…can’t do everything all the time.

If you’re wondering whether or not to have a professional take your holiday photo, don’t think, just do it. Trust me, seek professional help!
