Holiday Decorations: Easy, Fast Ways To Make Your Home Festive For Thanksgiving

With such hectic schedules as we all keep these days, who has time to consider decorating for the holidays? Christmas, sure, throw up a tree and wreath and call it a day. But Thanksgiving poses more of a challenge. When considering what food the table will hold, consider the following ideas for simple decorations:

Table cloth. You know, a table cloth doesn’t have to be an actual table cloth. It can be simple fabric draped over the entire table or simply down the middle, like a runner. You can get great fabric at a fabric store and even the remnants (if they are long enough) can work wonders to dress up a table. Either elegant monochrome or a colorful bounty, if paired with classic white napkins and you can’t go wrong.

Candles. Always use an odd number. I don’t know why, probably that’s just the way my Southern mother taught me, but odd is best when it comes to candles on a table. Line them up in a row down the center and both the tall and the votive sized candles work their magic on a table. And, you don’t even need fancy candle holders.

Vegetables. Go to a farmer’s market and get big, fall vegetables like pumpkins, gourds, corn or pomegranates in funky colors and shapes. Add a few big leaves (if you have a back yard) and make a centerpiece that won’t get in your way while having a conversation across the table. Especially if you place these around the aforementioned candles, it’ll look fantastic for little money and effort.

For bigger, more involved decorating ideas, try pairing antique plates with plain old white plates to dress up a table. Use baskets (where appropriate) for serving. Mix and match silverware. Your guests won’t care if your silver and plates don’t match, they will be focused on the smell and taste of the food as well as the “feel” of your home. Make it welcoming and you’re done!

As a disclaimer, the photo is from Pottery Barn and I’m not trying to sell you on the idea of going out and purchasing something just for one evening. I just thought they did a good job mixing candles, leaves and veggies as a centerpiece – just to give you an idea.
