Trends come and go, so it’s hard to really pinpoint a trend for a whole year. But, that said, there are trends that readily flow from what we see and experience around us. A handful of top designers (as published by the San Francisco Chronicle) have taken a stab at what will be “hot” this year. Here’s my take on what they have to say.
1. Texture: Yes! How easy is it to add some texture to personalize a room? If you’re a modernista like me, then a few well placed handmade items or natural materials can quickly soften a room as well as inject a little personality. I like things like masks I picked up on a trip to Guatemala years ago mixed in with an unfinished wooden stool (think a tree stump) next to a very sleek, clean lined couch and chair.
2. Bold design: I love the idea of injecting a little color in to a space, or pattern. Like with an outfit, mixing neutrals with a pop of something, like a statement piece is the way to go. Plus, the neutrals can morph from one trend to another simply by changing the statement piece. That way, when you are tired of a look, you won’t have to spend a fortune to re-design your space.
3. Wallpapered ceilings: Now I’ve never thought of this and upon first hearing it I pictured wallpaper peeling off in sheets from the ceiling, hanging down in strips looking awfully bad. But, take a minute and re-adjust your expectation of “wall paper” and you can see the brilliance in this…Wall stickers (like birds, clouds, trees, plain old circles or squares) can be artfully adhered to the ceiling to great visual affect. I’d say less is more on this one, but you could get down right creative with what you throw up there.
That’s what I think I’d like to incorporate in to my home this year at least…mixing things up a bit, but still maintaining what I already have. That way our home can have a new feel without costing a fortune!
