Kitchen Pots and Pans Going Green

There is a new line of kitchen ware that is jumping on the “green” bandwagon, using sustainable materials and avoiding harmful chemicals. Here are two non-stick pans that do not contain PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) I found in a recent San Francisco Chronicle article:
GreenPan: The Thermalon-coated pans are moderately nonstick but are stovetop-safe up to 850 degrees. The 8-inch skillet is available at Crate and Barrel ($49.95), with a lighter weight style from Target ($24.99) .
Scanpan: Features patented Green Tek, an excellent nonstick ceramic-titanium surface which is oven-safe to 500 degrees. It is also made from recycled aluminum and stainless steel. ScanPan’s new premium CTX line became available last month at Sur la Table, which also carries Scanpan’s Professional line. Sur La Table; 8-inch skillet (CTX, $99.95; Professional, $79.95).
Of course cast iron, stainless steel, ceramic and glass are all on the “green” side of things as well and might just be easier to find, especially if you can pick one up from a garage sale – now that’s really green.
