According to an Associated Press-GfK poll, 38% of all parents polled do not want their child to have the Swine Flu vaccine. They cite fears of adverse reactions to the vaccine or the belief that the Swine Flu is nothing worse than the regular flu.
Honestly, I still don’t know where I stand on this issue, even though Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has stated that the vaccine is safe and secure. You can read much more in the San Francisco Chronicle article on the subject.
Typically it takes scientists (and parents) some time to discover all the ins and outs of taking such vaccines. Unfortunately, with the Swine Flu vaccine, no such luxury exists…I’m wondering, what do you think is the best course of action?

Mira had presumed H1N1 a couple of weeks ago, and her “mild case” was pretty awful– fever of 103, total limp noodle, miserable. Tamiflu gave her nightmares, hallucinations, severe agitation, and insomnia by the third night– the treatment was almost worse than the flu. I’m pretty sure I caught it five days later, but I had an attenuated case– no fever, but sore throat, body aches, extreme fatigue and malaise. The next day, those symptoms got better but I developed a rabid ear infection and ruptured my eardrum less than 24 hours later. Nasty, nasty secondary infection after getting not that sick from the flu.
Our pedi recommended that Mira still get the vaccine, and I’m inclined to do it when it’s available here. I’ll certainly have to get vaccinated at work. I’m not worried about this vaccine bc it’s the same vaccine as the regular flu vaccine made with a different strain of flu. The flu vaccine has a well established safety record, and I took it when I was pregnant with Mira. (NOT that I’m pregnant now!

That’s just my two cents, as it applies to my situation. Vaccine or not, I hope y’all don’t have to deal with H1N1 over there. NOT fun.
Oh No! That sounds horrible. I can absolutely believe that the medication caused some terrible reactions…we had the same here for some steroids Sophie had to take for an ear infection. Full on, inconsolable screaming!
I’m inching toward getting the H1N1 vaccination for Sophie, it’s just me and my pregnant self I’m not so sure about. I wish there was more time to decide. It, too, got the flu shot the first time, so it’s not like I’m totally opposed…just haven’t made up my mind yet.
Hi! I’m not convince the vaccine is such a great idea. I’m still doing more research on it & adverse reactions. On the ear infections – did you know a warm onion applied to the ear will help with the pain!? Crazy, huh? But it works! Check out Mommy Diagnostics by Shonda Parker. It’s a great resource!
