Rub a dub dub, letters in the tub. We recently started placing these foam alphabet letters in the tub while we bathe our daughter. It’s not really to teach her, per se, but to get her familiar with seeing letters. She has been showing an interest in the books we read to her, so why not? Well, this little experiment has really turned out fun.
The letters are a huge hit! Now, when she recognizes a letter, she gleefully says, “D Doggie” or “doubl-vu.” She’s adding her own little references to remember things and, since she’s two, she has her own pronunciation as well.
But she loves to see her familiar letters out in the world – I think it makes her feel a bit more connected. Maybe I’m reading something in to it, but considering the look on her face that seems to say, “I know that!” I really think it’s helping her to feel a part of this big, scary world.
To be fair, I don’t really care if she learns her ABCs or 123s yet. There will be plenty of time for that. It’s just fun to see her experience a sense of belonging to something larger than just our family. In fact, I was off to the doctor the other day and she up and said, “D. Doctor.” I was floored.
