
Mattel has come out with a multicultural Barbie with darker skin, fuller lips, “make up and a sassy attitude,” in an effort to be more diverse.
Now, I’m all for multiculturalism but doesn’t this doll just take existing stereotypes and reinforce them? I realize it’s probably a hard thing to do – creating a different Barbie that isn’t so blond and blue eyed – but is this the answer? Some have even called these new black Barbies racist.
