Baby Potential Onesies

Posted on Jul 13, 2010 by No Comments

Every baby has the potential to be anything her heart desires and Baby Potential has onesies tell the world just what that is. They are endearing and, if I saw one on a baby, I might smile a knowing smile, thinking “you want to be a vet, you must love animals.” It says a little something about the baby…or about the parent.

My only criticism of these onesies that shout out to the world what a baby may want to be when they grow up is that it may inadvertently pressure the child. Parents invariably place their hopes and dreams on their kids. I just cringe a little bit when I think about putting “lawyer” on a baby’s shirt.

I realize, I could be over analyzing this – it’s just a onesie after all, not like the parent is choosing their child’s major in college when she pops out of the womb or anything. And there is nothing wrong with wanting to be a lawyer – it’s just a little weird to me to plaster that on a baby.

It’s funny, I read the “about us” section of the Baby Potential website and the company’s message is the exact opposite of the initial impression I got. They want to encourage the notion that anyone can do anything, which I whole-heartedly support. Baby Potential specifically creates gender, racial and socio-economic neutral graphic patches accompanied by gender, racial and socio-economic neutral career paths…”scientist, artist, philanthropist.” You get the gist.

Or you can custom order a career, like “recycler.” Or better yet, “thief” or how bout “carjacker”? Oooh ooh I got it – “unemployed philosophy major” or “BP executive” (ouch). You could actually have tons of fun with this, if you and your kid have a sense of sarcasm.

But back to seriousness…Baby Potential also talks about changing the perception that “at-risk” youth are somehow not able to reach their potential…they propose that at-risk kis CAN, in fact, be all they can be. However, (and this is the cynic in me) how many at-risk youth (or their parents) will be spending roughly $20 on a onesie that says “teacher”?

That said, I kind of love the “president” onesie and considering the fact that we currently have a sitting president who embodies the belief that anyone can reach the highest office in the land, maybe I need to brush that stodgy attitude off and embrace the inner potential in every kid…AND their clothes!

Llum: Adorable Clothes For Kids

I’m looking for Easter dresses for my girls and went to Llum to see what they had for this Spring. Llum (pronounced “loom” means light in Catalan) has a new line of really adorable clothes for kids.

Let me start by saying that I’m not a girly girl and I don’t do frills. My daughter, I’m beginning to suspect, loves frills. The clothes by Llum seem to be a good compromise – girly but not frilly.

The colors are truly great – inspired by the sun and not at all overly baby. These clothes seem like they can easily go from playground to a birthday party and look equally at home. Your tot can be well dressed but comfy, too.

I especially like the Bertoia sundress and think it would look great on my 2 year old. As for my infant, I actually think she’s too tiny to wear anything but a little onesie and maybe a cute hat, but a mommy can dream. Too bad they don’t have matching dresses, even though I swore I wouldn’t be that type of mom. There is something inside me that just can’t resist wanting to dress them alike. Well, not this year.

And, if you have a boy, check out this adorable baseball shirt with contrast arms and a pop of color around the neck.

Wanna know what to get that “little man” in your life? Look at these baby body suits from The Sandbox Society on Etsy. Totally hysterical. It’s sold out for now, but hopefully will return.

The “Oliver” body suit has a hand sewn tie at the neck and can come with suspenders also sewn in to the suit if you’d like. Actual men’s ties. Matching pants come with. it.

How ’bout that couch fabric in the background – don’t see that much anymore! Love the seriousness of this baby, too…totally fits.

OMG: A Snuggly for You and Baby

Introducing what may be the weirdest baby invention of the year: the Peekaru! I can imagine the inventor of this thing sitting around with friends (drinking heavily) saying, “I need a new pull-over but what about the baby strapped to me? I know, instead of taking little Tommy OFF before dressing, I’ll just make a jacket with a HOLE in the front…for the baby!”

Who needs baby clothes when mommy and baby can wear the same clothes?!? Because, really, as a pregnant woman I haven’t had my fill of really large clothes with extra fabric for the baby in the past nine months…

You gotta see for the demonstration:
