The Consumer Product Safety Commission held Target’s feet to the fire recently for knowingly importing toys with unsafe levels of lead paint. They just won a settlement from Target for $600,000.
Turns out the CPSC staff alleged that the giant retailer imported various toys (Kool Toyz Products, Anima – Bamboo Collection Games, Happy Giddy Gardening Tools and Sunny Patch Chairs) that had high levels of lead paint after highly publicized recalls spread the word about the unacceptable lead levels.
The federal ban on lead paint in toys has been in place since 1978 – long enough for Target to know better. In nailing Target for taking inadequate action to keep our children safe from the risks of lead paint, the CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said it best: “This penalty should remind importers and retailers that they have always had the same obligation to meet the strict lead limits as the manufacturers.”
Way to go Consumer Product Safety Commission!
You should know, though, that In agreeing to the settlement, Target denies CPSC’s allegations that it violated the law.
