Treats For Santa, Treats For Reindeers, Coal For Kids?

Cookies and milk for Santa, I’ve heard of. I don’t do it, but I’ve heard of parents doing it and it’s kinda fun, I think. And, treats for reindeers – less well known, but I’ve heard of this tradition, too. Usually it consists of carrots and celery left out on a plate alongside the plate of cookies and glass of milk.
Crate and Barrel has these little bags that you can set out if you don’t want to go the plate route. Fun idea. A little much since a plate will work just fine and it is just a prop, after all…but it could make the charade that much more complete. I don’t know, I don’t do anything, so what should I know?
But, I noticed they had these bags for coal. To be fair the “coal” was black licorice, but still, coal? Who gets the coal – is it a reminder to your kids not to be bad?
But if you’re actually putting out coal, doesn’t that say that the kids are ALREADY bad and it’s ALREADY Christmas, so what chance to they have to not be bad? I don’t get it.
Unless, of course, Santa isn’t riding a sled and he needs coal to power is non-environmentally friendly automobile that requires coal to get from house to house.
