I’m all for keeping an eye out for toxic substances we may inadvertently put in to our child’s body, but this is ridiculous. Balsamic vinegar and toxic levels of lead? How many kids do you know who eat salad?
Ok, Ok, I get it. It can be harmful, says Environmental Health News. As a pregnant woman, I do in fact eat my fair share of salads with balsamic and wine vinegar, so I do suppose that I’m letting this little fetus ingest lead, which, come to think of it does concern me.
But my daughter, at age 2 does not, at all, touch salad or anything else made with vinegar. She can say salad but she won’t eat it. So when exactly does a child consume vinegar and when can we stop worrying about it? I have no idea. Does your 7 year old eat salad?
The Food and Drug Administration states that one tablespoon of vinegar is the average serving size per day and, at that consumption, a child who has no other exposure to lead would have a 30% increase of lead found in her blood.
Excess levels of lead can lead to neurological problems, possibly resulting in learning and behavioral problems. So, especially if you live in California, don’t be surprised if you see warning labels in the grocery stare on the vinegar aisle.
