Could be the year of the hamster this Christmas. Zhu Zhu Pets toy hamsters are all the rage among their target audience, 3 to 10 year olds. In fact, Cepia Inc, the manufacturer (who, by the way is tiny in comparison to past “it” toy makers like Mattel and their Tickle Me Elmos) estimates that they will earn roughly $100 million in toy sales by the end of the year…on $10 hamsters.

I can see the appeal for both kids and parents- tiny little robot hamsters that can drive cars. Did I mention they start at $10? And they drive cars? But, they do come with all sorts of additional things that go with the hamsters, like a fun house, blankets, you name it I’m sure the hamsters have it.

I first read about them in the San Francisco Chronicle, but I’m certain you can find them everywhere, as long as supplies last. And that may not be long, if past Christmas crazes are any indication.
